How is a brake chamber measured?

An air brake chamber is measured by locating size markings on the brake chamber or by measuring the diameter of the clamp holding the chamber together. Measuring the diameter requires a special tool, whereas locating the size markings may require the removal of dirt, corrosion or paint. Brake chamber sizes can be found in the vehicle owner's manual.air-brake-chamber-1

Common sizes of brake chambers include 16, 20, 24, 30 and 36. The size refers to the square inches of effective area in the chamber, therefore a size 30 brake chamber means there are 30 square inches inside. A size 3030 brake chamber has an outside diameter of 8 3/32 inches, according to Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment Magazine. The size of a brake chamber is important because it determines the brake adjustment limit.
Air brake chambers 3030 fill with air upon pushing the brake pedal, thereby activating pushrods that apply the brakes to the wheels. Adjustments need to be made with pushrods so that they do not exceed limits. If pushrods are over-adjusted, they can become damaged. These rods have indicators to ensure proper inspection of the air brakes. These devices should be inspected daily for wear, especially with companies that use air brakes on a regular basis.
Replacing a Spring Air Brake Chamber

cage it off, mark your hoses, colored zip ties or a bit of telephone wire works good, disconnect your hoses, now disconnect your clevis, and you're ready to unbolt from the axle. Take that all to your bench take the clevis off the new brake can and leave the nut, cage it, take the clevis off your old brake can and set up next to your new one and determine where you need to cut the push rod. cut the push rod and run your lock/jam nut off the allthread because you left it on there so you don't have to go chasing threads, put your lock nut and clevis back on and repeat what I said at the beginning only backwards. get everything all back together and now adjust your brakes, all of them while you're under there.

Now I'm sure that someone else on here will come along and give a better detailed step by step instructions on this, but if what I just rambled on doesn't make sense, then I'd be a bit hesitant about replacing your own brake cans, as much as the DOT likes to go after a guy (driver, mechanic, company) for brake infractions, the liability may be less to just have it done. Let alone safety liability for one's one personal well-being...

Also, if the old can is rusted, I would VERY HIGHLY recommend AGAINST using any air, or impact tools to cage that brake can off, and position your body similar as to if you were doing show trimming on a calf that likes to kick, as little of your body in the 'line of fire' as possible. You should make sure however you get rid of that old brake can is going to disarm it before sending it to scrap.
Go to about the 13 minute mark of this video, it's a brake can off of a loader, and a cheesy old safety film, but it gives you a idea of what that spring will do.

How to Replacement and Install Brake Chambers

30 30 Brake chambers are used to turn the air pressure in a brake system into a force which can stop large vehicles. However, like any car part, these can wear down over time and malfunction, compromising the entire system. Installing replacements can be a do-it-yourself job, but not for the complete novice. You will need to have some auto repair experience, the right tools, and a guide to follow like the one below.
Type-3030-Brake-Chamber-2
Production Process:Pressing the model – Deburring –Surface Treatment –Lathe Finish –Drilling and Tapping –Assembling –Testing Gas Tightness –Packaging

Step 1 - Prepare

The first thing that you will need to do is prepare your work area. Make sure that the vehicle is on a level surface, and place wheel chocks underneath the wheels. Then, find a spot underneath the damaged brake chamber.

Step 2 - Remove Brake Chamber

Take the chamber caging tool (T-tool) off with a 3/4-inch wrench; from there, you can take the plug off from behind the chamber itself. You will need to push in the caging tool as far as it will go behind the brake chamber. Then, turn it clockwise until you feel it lock. You will do this until the tool cannot be pulled out. Tighten the nut of the caging tool afterward with your wrench.
There will be cotter pins that need to be removed from the clevis pins next. From there, you will need to get the slack adjuster released. Also, detach all of the air lines as well as the fittings with your crescent wrench.
Once this is done, there are two mounting nuts that need to be removed from the Type 30 30 brake chamber in order to take it out and set it aside.

Step 3 - Prepare Rod Disposal

Now, the nut in the caging tool can be unscrewed and the jam nut removed from the chamber rod with a pair of channel locks. Take the clevis off the chamber rod at this time as well. This will allow you to measure the base of the brake chamber to this rod. Write down the results for later reference.

Step 4 - Trim new Chamber Rod

Secure the new chamber into a table vise, and extend the chamber rod, measuring it out to match your previous length. Mark on the rod where you need to cut with a soapstone. Then, trim off the excess with a hacksaw. Some work with a metal file should smooth out any rough edges left behind. Rethread the clevis afterwards until it is visible on both ends.

Step 5 - Reinstall Cage Tool

Reposition under vehicle with the new chamber. The caging tool needs to be placed behind the brake chamber, so start by turning the caging tool again until it locks. If it does not pull out, it is in right. Then, put the nut back in and tighten it completely.

Step 6 - Place Brake Chamber In

Position brake chamber with the holes against mounting bracket so you can tighten the mounting nuts to the stud. Reconnect the air lines to the chamber, and put the clevis pins and cotter pins back in place. Read manufacturers’ instructions afterwards if you need help with brake adjustment, or consult a mechanic.

Full Range and Cheapest Parabolic Leaf Springs

What is a parabolic spring?

Basically a Parabolic Spring is a spring that consists of two or more leaves. The leaves touch only in the center, where they are fixed to the axle and at the outer ends, where they are fixed to the vehicle. In between those two points the leaves do not touch each other as they do with conventional leaf springs.
Each leaf represents a complete spring in it's self and will act as such. To enable this the leaf is tapered, from the center (thick) to the outer ends (thin). This tapering is parabolic, it means that every centimeter (or inch) the thickness of the leaf decreases in an amount that relates to the square function of it's length.
what is parabolic spring
parabolictapering
Above: Tapering in an "ideal" mono leaf spring. You can see that one leaf has a similar shape as a multi-leaf spring.
Below: You can see the tapering in the leaves of the spring. The leaves taper from the center till the end (eye) and are separated by distance blocs to prevent contact.
182-9-Parabolic-Leaf-Spring
This may sound complicated but in fact it is very simple. Every single leaf will have, more or less, the shape of a
complete multi leaf spring and thus it's capable to cope with the same forces. This means that the ideal parabolic spring could have only one leaf, however, this type of "mono leaf" spring will have very limited articulation/weight ratio due to high internal stresses so a 2 or 3 leaf parabolic spring can divide the stresses more evenly across the
other leaves and thus more axle movement is possible. That is why we designed 2 and 3 leaf springs. An other reason to increase the number of leaves on a parabolic spring is to increase the rate (load capacity). Because every leaf is one spring we can ad or take out leaves without compromising the strength of the leaf it self. So for example we have a 3 leaf rear spring and we ad one similar leaf the rate will go up for about 30% which means that the load capacity increases by +/- 30% (depending on the shackle effect)

And our Parabolic Leaf Springs have already won good reputation in the market.
Advantages of Parabolic Springs
Parabolic springs are leaf springs that consists of two or more leaves that only make contact in the center and at the outer ends. Each leaf in a parabolic springs is tapered to be thicker at the center and slowly thins out towards the ends. This is different from the conventional leaf springs wherein the leaves are in contact with each other and in which each leaf has uniform thickness from end to end.
parabolic springs180-12-Parabolic-Leaf-Spring
Compared to conventional leaf springs, parabolic springs are able to resist more compression and have better flexibility. The flexibility results to better ride quality. The vertical speed movements are also easier to adjust with these types of springs. Due to the structure and components involved, parabolic springs are also lighter. This is an important factor when the priority is for maximum performance.
Another great application for parabolic springs is for off-road vehicles in which the flexibility of the spring is more effective in keeping the wheels always in contact with the ground compared to stiffer conventional springs.
The only downside to parabolic springs is that it has lesser capability when it comes to carry heavy loads. As such, these types of springs are used for when comfort is more preferred such as the cases with passenger buses. Only the coil springs are offer more comfortable than parabolic springs. However, coil springs which are often attached only to a single point of the chassis have the disadvantage when it comes to load distribution.
There are also newer developments with parabolic springs with brings it close to coil springs when it comes to comfort

Do Parabolic Springs require any maintenance?650-23-Parabolic--ZType-Leaf-Spring
A little light oil between the leaves will deter corrosion and prevent squeaks. The rubber bushings should be checked
occasionally. It is also very important to check that the 'U' bolts are torqued up to 70 ft lb. The 'U' bolt torque should be checked frequently under difficult conditions. You should also check that the shackles are tight by loosening the lock nuts and tightening up the shackle bolts. The condition of the axle buffers and check straps should also be checked occasionally.
I notice you use a larger rubber bushing in your spring eyes. Why is that?
Parabolic springs flex more than conventional springs and having an eye 18% larger allows us to use a bushing which can withstand flexure much better than a conventional one. The larger bushing also reduces stresses in the spring eye of the main leaf and insulates the Land Rover better from transmitted road noise.
