How to Install Boat Trailer Leaf Springs

Leaf-spring-banner
If your boat trailer frequently bottoms out, the trailer’s leaf springs may be due for replacement. Over time, the leaf springs may loose their ductility from repeatedly absorbing the up and down motion from your boat’s weight. The springs may also rust from fresh- or saltwater corrosion, compounding the wear and tear. Upgrade your leaf springs to improve your trailer’s handling, smooth bumpy travel and minimize damage to your boat.
    • 1
Lower the trailer’s tongue jack stand to stabilize the front end. Jack the rear of the trailer, placing a jack stand under the side on which you’ll be working. Place blocks under the front of the trailer for additional support. Place a jack under the rear axle to remove weight from the leaf spring.
    • 2
Remove the U-bolts and retainer bracket that hold the center of the leaf spring to the axle. With the jack supporting the axle, remove the spring bolts from the shackle forks that hold either end of the leaf spring in place. Remove the old leaf spring.
    • 3
Install the new leaf spring in the reverse order that you removed the old one. Fasten the front leaf spring end loosely to the shackle. Rotate the leaf spring up and under the axle. Seat the axle in the center of the leaf spring, and fasten the other end of the leaf spring loosely to the rear shackle fork.
    • 4
Fasten the U-bolts and retainer bracket to the axle. Tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern for a secure fit. Finish tightening the leaf spring ends to the shackle forks.
    • 5
Tighten all the bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications, using a torque wrench.

Our leaf springs are made with premium quality high alloy spring

Tinmy Trailer Leaf springs are China made, matched pairs. We do not just pull two off the shelf like most spring companies do. Spring arches vary when they come off the production line due to tolerances. We take the extra time to match them. This helps insure proper ride height and a level stance side to side. Our  leaf springs are made with premium quality high alloy spring steel and meet or exceed OEM specifications. The correct springs are determined not only by year and model, but also by body style, engine size and other variables depending on the model. We do not sell one-size fits all. In addition to stock ride height, 1" or 2" lift or lowering height is also available for many models. Both standard and heavy duty springs are also available for many models. If the spring uses a pressed in eye bushing that will come already installed in the leaf spring.

Step 8 Change Trailer Leaf Springs

Trailer Leaf springs are designed to attach to the body of a trailer by means of a shackle. Extending under, and mounted to, the axle, leaf springs provide tension against the axle that is necessary to haul heavy loads. Comprised of three or more separate pieces of metal that are banded together, leaf springs are bent in a slight U shape to provide resistance to heavy loads. Replacing leaf springs may need to be done periodically due to normal wear and tear.
Step 1
Loosen the lug nuts on the trailer wheel with a lug wrench. Typically you will turn the lug nuts to the left to loosen them. Do not completely remove the lug nuts, only loosen them for now.

Step 2
Place a jack under one side of the trailer in a secure location. Raise the trailer with the jack until the tire is 2 or 3 inches off the ground. Place a jack stand on either side of the tire so that they contact the frame of the trailer. Adjust the height of the jack stand until they contact and support the trailer.

Step 3
Remove the lug nuts from the threaded wheel bolts and place them aside for use later. Pull the wheel and tire assembly from the trailer and lay it on the ground.

Step 4
Look under the axle and find the four nuts attached to U bolts that hold the spring assembly to the axle. Remove the nuts with a socket and socket wrench and place them to the side for use later. Remove the metal plate from below the leaf spring and pull the U bolts up and away from the leaf spring and axle.

Step 5
Locate the leaf spring shackle on either side of the axle. The shackle will attach the leaf spring to the trailer and will feature two bolts. The lower bolt attaches to the leaf spring and the upper bolt to the trailer. Loosen and remove the lower nut. Push the bolt through and out of the shackle and leaf spring.

Step 6
Repeat the process to remove the lower bolt from the opposite side of the leaf spring so that the spring can be completely separated from the trailer.

Step 7
Install a new leaf spring in the reverse order that the old one was removed. Secure one side of the spring to the lower shackle and bolt in place using the bolt and nut that was removed. Raise the leaf spring and attach the opposite end to the other shackle. Tighten the nuts on both shackles securely.

Step 8
Assemble the U bolts back around the axle and new leaf spring Place the metal plate over the four ends of the U bolts and secure tightly with the nuts that were removed. Check all nuts and bolts that they are tight and reinstall the tire.

2014 Corvette Still will retain real leaf spring suspension

Tinmy.Co.ltd - When a new Trailer leaf spring seen some subset of the wonders fan base Corvette if its "unique" cross composite leaf spring sheet was finally abandoned in favor of the coil spring suspension and shock absorbers. Generally, these are people who take their Corvettes to the track, those who want to mess with the configuration. A handful of companies alternatives do good business selling conversion kits coil of wire to meet their needs.
A sketch of the new C7 leak that showed up on a personal tinmyparts.com gives us the answer: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will continue to use transverse leaf springs  made of composite material.
Spring seems like a tongue behind the lower triangle in black and white line drawing front suspension. Compare that to the first pictures of our walkaround suspension of the Corvette Z06, 2011 and you will have a better idea of how it exposes.
No similar pattern looks back on the same tinmyparts.com, but it is clearly the same temporary suspension will work there too.
This crucial information is not to say the whole suspension was deferred. There is far enough detail to see if the geometry is changed. For this, we will have to wait until General Motors is ready to reveal more details, probably debut of the Corvette 2014 Auto Show in Detroit in 2013.
For now, at least, it's safe to say that the Corvette coil-over conversion business side is alive and well. And Vette against Viper wars tuners track days with the Vipers can tweak and tinker with anything they want with the factory coil-over-configuration, while the faithful Corvette C7 will have to open their wallets and make some changes in the basic parts .
Edmunds said: This may seem an old technology for some, but Chevrolet has proven time and again that the transverse leaf spring can be used to great effect with good design.

Trailer Air Suspension System replaces the leaf springs

Trailer Flex Air Suspension System replaces the Trailer leaf springs, improving towing, handling and ride quality
Standard suspensions on trailer and fifth-wheel chassis have looked the same since they first hit the road. Typical configurations enlist leaf springs, shackles and equalizers to tie the axles to the frame. In the last few years, computer technology has helped raise the bar using sophisticated programs that have the capability of simulating the actual movement of components. This allows for detailed “testing” without the need of physically fabricating parts and running trial and error stints on the road. The result has been a number of advanced suspension components that improve ride and handling.
Begin the installation process by removing all parts from the existing trailer axles for reuse on the Trailer Flex Air Ride Suspension System.
Begin the installation process by removing all parts from the existing trailer axles for reuse on the Trailer Flex Air Ride Suspension System.
Thinking outside the box, two brothers from Canada, Dereck and Paul Legros, have invented an all-new air ride configuration for trailers that could very well set a new standard for trailer suspensions. The Trailer Flex Air Ride Suspension System is not just an add-on to the trailer’s existing suspension; it completely replaces the standard components and delivers an ideal ride height, under any payload, resulting in dramatically improved handling, increased safety and reduced driver fatigue.
A big benefit of an air ride suspension that works properly is the elimination of chucking, the front to rear motion that is commonly associated in part with traditional leaf spring suspensions. The adjustable ride height provided by the Trailer Flex Air Ride allows for a

more balanced attitude based on loading distribution and eliminates the side-to-side motion that often occurs with traditional leaf spring suspensions. Once the driver experiences the improvement realized by the advanced Trailer Flex design, he/she will never look back.
Trailer Flex’s patented Air Ride Suspension kit includes four heavy-duty commercial air bags and four hydraulic shocks designed to bolt on to the trailer’s existing spring hangers. In addition, the air compressor and 5-gallon air storage tank allow the user to control the inflation of the air bags via the automatic leveling valve that mounts conveniently between the trailer’s two axles.
Start the installation of the Trailer Flex axles by bolting the axle assembly to the front spring hanger.
Prior to installation, the distance from the ground to the bottom edge of a side molding on the outside of the trailer was measured. The new suspension was installed on a 36-foot fifth-wheel that measured 9 inches lower at the rear than at the front when attached to a four-wheel-drive Ford F-350 dually truck. Ideally, the traveling attitude of the fifth-wheel should be as close to level as possible, something the Trailer Flex components were designed to do.
With the trailer on frame jack stands, the tires and wheels, axles and leaf springs were removed. The test trailer had disc brakes, so the calipers were removed and tied up to the frame. For electric brakes, simply mark and cut the wires. Next, all the parts from the axles were transferred to the Trailer Flex assembly.
Using two floor jacks, the Trailer Flex assembly was raised into the existing spring hangers and bolted into place. The final steps included mounting the air storage tank, compressor, leveling valve assembly, and all valves and air lines onto the Trailer Flex assembly. Each trailer install will be slightly different, and in this case the compressor on/off switch was mounted near the batteries, the air pressure switch was installed next to the on/off switch and the wiring was routed to the compressor.
After double-checking the installation, an angle iron cross member was welded from one side to the other near the axles. Tires and wheels were reinstalled and the jack stands were removed before lowering the trailer to the ground.
The first step in activating the Trailer Flex Air Ride Suspension System is to turn on the compressor and fill the air bags and storage tank. Keeping a close eye on the ride height, the level control valve is adjusted so the air bags settled with 11/2 inches of clearance above the bottom plate. Make sure to check for air leaks at all fittings prior to preparing to hitching up for a test ride. A test drive should be performed before making final ride height adjustments.Trailer Flex’s air suspension is a far cry from riding on leaf springs. The improvement in ride comfort, handling and safety is light years ahead of the standard setup and your trailer will thank you for smoothing out the bumps.

Leaf spring Torsion axle several key issues

The choice between Trailer leaf spring and torsion axles can involve several factors. First, I’ll start by saying each has its advantages and disadvantages and there are many people who think that their choice, whether leaf spring or torsion, is the only logical one.
Here are some of the facts. Standard leaf spring axles use a series of metal springs while torsion axles use a rubber spring for suspension.
Leaf springs  axles are less compact than torsion axles and take up more space and add more weight to your trailer.
Torsion axles cannot be repaired; they must be replaced while leaf spring axles can be repaired. The downside is that leaf spring axles need more maintenance than torsion axles do. The rubber inserts in a torsion axle will tend to lose memory and strength if a loaded trailer sits idle for an extended period of time.
Torsion axles may not perform as well in extremely cold weather as their rubber will lose its elasticity.
With leaf spring axles, the load on the axles is always balanced, this means that if your trailer rides over a rough patch of road and the axles become out of alignment, both axles will still carry the same amount of weight because of the built in weight equalizer. Torsion axles don’t have this feature as they have independent suspension. If there is more weight on one tire this can lead to heat build-up and cause blowouts.
Torsion axles tend to be lower to the ground while leaf spring axles will have more clearance. A torsion axle, with its lower center of gravity will offer improved handling and better cornering.
Torsion axles will have a better ride than leaf spring axles as torsion axles are cushioned with rubber.
Torsion axles are preferred for lighter loads and on-highway use. However, due to the fact torsion axles do not offer weight equalization, they are not suitable for heavier loads, rough roads or off-highway use.
In the end, torsion axles will give you a better ride and require less maintenance than leaf spring axles will. Leaf spring axles are more durable, less expensive and easier to repair. Each has their fans and both work well.(Leaf spring

Tinmy Leaf springs Functions with Applications

Leaf Springs To assure proper spring life, the maintenance and inspection process must include the entire suspension system of springs and chassis parts.
leaf spring
The motoring public has learned that proper maintenance on their vehicles is essential to obtain longer life and economical service in this age of rising equipment and fuel costs. In most normal maintenance checks, the spring suspension system is sorely overlooked, but a minimum of attention to the spring suspension would yield a longer and more reliable suspension system service.
When warriors of old made punctures in each other with sharp rapiers, the swordsmen liked to test the integrity of their rapiers by bending them almost double to make sure the rapiers would not break in actual combat.
It is customary practice, of some Boat Trailer Leaf Spring manufacturers, to test every assembled spring in a "bulldozer". This bends the spring farther than it could ever be bent in actual service before the axle makes metal-to-metal contact with the frame. While this does test the spring, and would reveal any flaws existing in the steel, the real purpose is something else.
By bending the spring farther in the bulldozer; than it would ever go in actual service; this stresses the metal, on the tension side of the leaves, a little beyond the yield point. This "pre-sets" the spring so that it will reduce, settle or sag in actual use, and steering alignments will be better maintained.
It is obviously impractical to "pre-set" coil springs beyond normal operating compression, because the adjacent coils of a helical spring make contact with each other-before the maximum yield point is reached. This would seem to be the reason why coil spring front suspensions frequently settle or sag, during the first five or ten thousand miles of use, and then have to be replaced in order to restore normal steering alignments.

Bulldozing or Pre-setting a Leaf Spring
Leaf Spring Types
Practically all leaf springs, as now used on cars, buses and trucks are of the semi-elliptic type. Because the semi-elliptic spring has the outstanding advantages of not only acting as a spring, to resiliently support the vehicle, but also serves the important functions of positioning the axles and of cushioning both driving torque and brake reaction, the simple semi-elliptic type has superseded many other kinds of springs, including cantilever; platform, full elliptic, etc. A semi-elliptic spring gives just as easy riding as the same amount of steel, built into a cantilever of full elliptic spring.

Full Taper or Parabolic
Although not new to the market, the full taper spring is now very popular for suspension systems on light to heavy truck application as well as some passenger car suspensions. The major advantages to this type spring are its superior ride and overall reduction of vehicle weight, which nets greater revenue per load miles.
The full taper spring, although superior in some aspects, is not as forgiving as its counterpart the multi-leaf spring and should therefore be checked on regularly scheduled maintenance periods.

Tinmy Replacement Leaf Spring Buyer's Guide

We have already established that the leaf springs Toyota offered on Tinmy actions are designed so that the plant leaf spring Tinmy Out is almost guaranteed. Fortunately, Tinmy owners pickups are blessed with a wide range of choices of replacement spring not only built higher than the replacement of the Toyota factory level, but are often much cheaper than to buy at the dealership.
Tinmy Autoparts are packed with truck owners seeking advice on the best replacement leaf springs for sale their pickups. Some of the most popular off-road and on-road suspension names were mentioned as possible candidates for improving weak stock units. Let's look at some of the main contenders.
Post last updated in September 2014.
Contacts: Info@tinmy.cn
Old Man Emu
Old Man Emu (part of ARB) provides Tinmy rear swing replacement spring. These springs - springs known as "Dakar" - are OEM replacement units that cost about $ 200 per side, and also offer a 2.75-inch lift on stock. These sources also offer additional support for heavy loads, but as a result they do not go as well as in Tinmy stock springs they replace.
OME / ARB said that sheet can be added to the package to further increase the lift on a half-inch. Similarly, a sheet can be removed to reduce the height of a half inch (as well as improving the turn).
Alcan
Alcan offer replacement springs for 2005 and Tinmy plan that are designed to handle the type of fight that off-road driving on typical dishes. Springs detail about $ 600 for the pair, a packet coming in eight sheets and provide up to 2 inches of lift relative to the stock. This helps to keep the back of the truck level when towing, and it can also give owners Tinmy a little extra room under the bumper to mount more aggressive tires.
75x14-7
According to Kurz Johnny Wheeler Off-Road, Alcan built their specific springs for the left and right side, a tactic that is intended to correct the report that many homeowners "Taco lean." Says "Alcan design features a slightly larger spring on the driver's side to counter the weight of the battery, fuel cell, and the driver." Kurz
Deaver
Deaver is well known in the world of desert racing name, and it is not surprising that they also offer pieces of leaf springs for 2005 + Tinmy relation to Alcan units, Deaver springs provide a lift less aggressive (1.5 inch stock, although the 2-inch options are available), and come with a pack of 10 sheets. They pretty much the same as Alcans in terms of price ($ 600 + per set).
NOTE: It is important to understand that the number of sheets included in a pack of spring does not necessarily dictate the strength characteristics of the sheet or ride ... the Deaver pack has 10 sheets and Alcan 8, but it would be a mistake assume a dumb better than another simply based on that figure.
Leafs OEM replacement
Buyers can also choose to buy a set of OEM replacement springs for Tinmy. Currently, Olathe Toyota Parts Center sells for about $ 450 per side. While this is twice as options aftermarket, OEM sheets go up as the leaves they replace. They also correspond to the stock high tower.
It is difficult for us to recommend buying OEM replacement, but they have to be considered if the ride quality is really important to you.
Add-a-leaf options
Deaver and OME offer two add-a-leaf games that allow you to add an extra spring blade to your pre or post-TSB current stock Toyota leaves. The idea behind these kits is that additional sheets will take some stress off the OEM units and reduce the chances they will break. Add-a-leaf kits can also increase heiht path.
Honestly, we think it is best to avoid this option and go for a complete replacement of each packet backsheet to prevent problems down the road. You could save money in the short term by choosing to go on the road add-a-leaf springs but if your actions give up the ghost anyway you end up having to redo the entire installation.
Does anyone have a first hand experience they would like to share regarding the replacement lea
