On Cloudsurfer Performance Review: Goodbye Speedboard

The On Cloudsurfer has been around for about seven years, but the 2023 version changes everything. Gone are On’s Speedboard plate and typical cloud geometry. Instead, the midsole features CloudTec Phase, a digitally constructed midsole geometry based on scanning thousands of runners.

For On Running, switching up the midsole technology is a significant risk…they’re super popular among the masses. But, the reception is more lukewarm among competitive runners. Is the On Cloudsurfer finally a shoe that everyone will love? Let’s find out.

On Cloudsurfer

Release Date: March 23, 2023

Price: $160

Weight: Men’s 8.64oz, Women’s 7.23oz

Drop: 10mm

Sizing: True to size

    • Rundown: The On Cloudsurfer is probably On’s best pure running shoe yet…but the disjointed feel of the midsole may not work for some people.

Midsole

The new CloudTec Phase midsole is the star feature of the On Cloudsurfer and the main marketing message behind the shoe. The On website and press release are littered with language like following:

In CloudTec Phase, the computer-generated Clouds seamlessly collapse like dominos when your foot lands. The result? Supreme, enhanced cushioning, and a softer, smoother transfer from heel to toe.

Which, sounds absolutely fantastic. I did feel like the Clouds collapsed like dominos and did find the heel of the On Cloudsurfer to be the softest On running shoe I’ve ever worn. What I didn’t like, however, was that the heel and forefoot felt like different shoes.

The heel of the On Cloudsurfer felt as soft and plush as many of the best road running shoes on the market. On the other hand, the forefoot felt like a completely different foam. It was strangely firm underfoot and a big switch from what was used in the heel (although it’s the same foam). The combination of the two together in one shoe felt disjointed and uneven.

Whether you like the CloudTech Phase midsole on the On Cloudsurfer will depend on 1) where you land and 2) your preference for cushioning. For example, if you’re a heavy heel striker who loves soft, plush foams, you’ll likely think the Cloudsurfer is great. But I think most midfoot strikers like myself will leave their runs unsatisfied because the Cloudsurfer can’t really decide what it wants to be.

Upper

As usual, On’s engineered mesh upper looks and feels premium. It’s also noteworthy that the looks didn’t suffer as On upped the amount of recycled polyester. I’m always a fan of including more recycled materials when it doesn’t affect the end product’s wearability.

The upper is, again as usual for On, soft and comfortable. The On Cloudsurfer has plenty of padding at the heel and in the tongue but keeps the rest of the shoe light on the bulk. So, even with the extra padding, the Clousurfer still feels light and airy.

Outsole

The On Cloudsurfer’s outsole has a large patch of rubber with diamond-shaped inlets at the forefoot and a smaller one at the back of the heel. It doesn’t look like much, but the grip was solid and the traction didn’t show any signs of wear during my testing. I think this outsole will last the life of the shoe and you’ll be happy with the grip on multiple surfaces.

Is the On Cloudsurfer wide foot friendly?

The Nike Ja 1 is fairly wide foot friendly. The last is on the wider side which will satisfy a fair amount of people. I’d still recommend most wide footers go up a half size to be safe. Everyone else can go true to size.

Is the On Cloudsurfer worth $160?

I mean, $150-160 is about the right price point for a shoe with the On Cloudsurfer’s stack and cushioning technology. Do I think there are better neutral cushioned running shoes for the same price? Yes. But, this one isn’t overpriced by any means.

Cons

We covered the biggest con in the midsole section…the disjointed feel of the cushioning from heel to forefoot. If you’re not a midfoot striker, the difference in feel might not bug you. Well that and some forefoot strikers might want a little more squish. Otherwise, there’s nothing else to complain about.

On Cloudsurfer Summary

The On Cloudsurfer shows me On Running is dedicated to making shoes competitive runners love to wear. In eschewing the speedboard, On is showing us they have no sacred cows and are willing to do what it takes to make awesome running shoes. And while the On Cloudsurfer doesn’t nail the midsole feel, it’s a shoe a bunch of people are going to enjoy.

Nike Ja 1 Review

The Nike Ja 1 is very reminiscent of several Kyrie models and feels like it will be a solid on-court performer.

The Nike Ja 1 is Ja Morant’s first signature shoe with Nike. The launch of Ja’s first signature coincides with the departure of Kyrie Irving from Nike’s roster of signature athletes but it looks like the Ja Morant signature line will pick up where the Kyrie line left off. The Ja 1 is very reminiscent of several Kyrie models and will seemingly fill the niche of a “well tractioned, reactive guard shoe” for Nike from here on out.

Nike Ja 1 Traction

The Nike Ja 1 features a solid rubber outsole with a very aggressive, herringbone-adjacent traction pattern. We have seen very similar patterns on the Kyrie Infinity and Kyrie Low 5. In fact, the rubber compound on the Nike Ja 1 is almost identical to what we see on the Kyrie Low 5, so you can expect similar on-court performance.

Traction on the Nike Ja 1 promised to be excellent indoors and outdoors, although the outsole is not built with the most durable rubber we’ve ever seen. But, for however long the pattern will last, you will get great grip out of the Nike Ja 1. Another thing to look out for is dust build-up while playing indoors.

Nike Ja 1 Cushioning

nike ja 1 cushioning

Here we have a very similar setup to what we used to find in the Kyrie signature line. The Nike Ja 1 is equipped with a lightweight Phylon midsole with a small, top-loaded Zoom Air unit in the forefoot. The Phylon is rather firm, and all in all the Nike Ja 1 offers a very reactive and low-to-the-ground on-court experience. This setup is very similar to what we saw in the kd 15

If you are looking for a reactive and stable cushioning setup with a lot of court feel, this will be a great option. You won’t find a ton of compression or impact protection, but, since that forefoot Zoom Air unit is top-loaded, it does add some step-in comfort.

Nike Ja 1 Materials

The Nike Ja 1 features a completely synthetic upper that combines textiles, synthetic leather, and some TPU reinforcements. None of these materials is premium in any way but those synthetic leather overlays do make the shoe feel nicer in hand. The materials will adapt well and quickly to your foot as well as add breathability and containment.

The shoe’s upper is reminiscent of another Kyrie, in this case, the Kyrie 1, and the shoe feels very similar in hand. Materials are nothing to write home about but they get the job done and for $110, you can’t really ask for more.

Nike Ja 1 Support

In terms of support features, there is nothing mind-blowing featured on the Nike Ja 1. With the combination of the stable cushioning system, the wide base of the shoe, the material build of the upper and the shoes fit, you have more than enough to get you where you are going. On top of that, you have a nice heel counter and TPU reinforcements for lateral stability.

Nike Ja 1 Fit

The Nike Ja 1 fits true to size, so go with your usual size with Nike, but they do fit snugly. This type of 1 to 1 fit is great for on-court performance, but it is not everyone’s cup of tea. If this is your case, we suggest tying them on in-store or going up half a size.

Nike Ja 1 Overall

The Nike Ja 1 feels like it will be a solid on-court performance basketball shoe. You really can’t go wrong with great traction, solid cushioning, and good materials. It definitely isn’t a shoe that is built for every type of basketball player and will be better suited for smaller shifter players that will get the most out of that traction, reactive cushioning setup, and court feel. If they end up performing like the Kyrie Low 5 (which is a very safe bet) then we will have one of the best guard-specific shoes of the year.

Nike Zoom Freak 4 Review 2023

Here is the summary of the Nike Zoom Freak 4 Review. For a detailed review, continue reading!

Our Verdict:

Best for Centers and Versatile players

Nike Zoom Freak 4 has a few subtle but necessary improvements to the last shoe. Its traction, cushion, and material are very supportive for heavy Centers. The cushion is flexible and responsive. However, it lacks a torsional plate in the shoe base. But even so, the base is stiff with a beefy cushion in the midsole. Nike Zoom Freak is one of the few latest shoes in which many basketball centers consistently score high.

Pros

  • Comfortable cushion
  • Wide, stable base
  • Breathable material
  • Impact protection
  • Stable shoes
  • Increase jump height

Cons

  • The outsole is not good for outdoors
  • Material looks chea

Detailed Nike Zoom Freak 4 Review

I have this freaking awesome pair of Giannis Zoom Freak 4 that has a robust construction to go with Gianni’s brutal footwork. Does it look FREAKIN’ Awesome?

Yeah, I am pretty excited to tell you that I liked the design aesthetics. It felt lighter on my feet, and the Zoom unit is super bouncy

The inverted swoosh, which is the part of the Giannis Zoom Freak sneakers, is pretty big on the lateral side.  The Giannis logo on the tongue and computer-generated traction ( As Nike said) are the things that I noticed right out of the box.

You can check our top 10 recommendations for  basketball shoes for centers here.

What’s Exciting About Nike Zoom Freak 4

Nike Zoom Freak 4 is definitely the better-looking sneaker of all the previous 3 Freak line shoes.

And the second thing is its wide base which looks more stable than any other shoe this year. It gives a nice push in the forward direction with its curve shape.

As a player who uses shifty footwork in my game, I am certain that its the ONE basketball sneaker that will reserve its place in my top 5 favourite basketball shoes of the year.

1. Traction

Nike Zoom Freak 4 has a unique traction pattern. Nike labelled it as computer-generated traction.

The grooves on the outsole are nicely separated. It does need a little break in time to fully show its potential. After that initial period of a few hours, you get very good reliable traction.

The outsole also does not pick up dus. So, you don’t need to worry about dust pickup for all four quarters of the game. It’s multidirectional traction that can handle sudden stops.

2. Cushion

Nike Zoom Freak 4 has outdone the job by introducing a cushion which gives a little bounce.

And yet they have kept the weight of the shoe pretty under a range to go with the shifty footwork of the guards and do not bottom out from the heavier weight of big guards.

Any player would enjoy the cushion, which is a full-length Phylon and 2 Zoom Units on the forefoot parts. You can see the zoom units from the outsole. Also, a react foam runs in the midfoot.

The cushion gives solid impact protection and a good amount of bounce for vertical jumps. Overall the cushion provides impact protection for hard landings. It gives great step-in comfort.

I appreciate the tech that Nike has applied. Because it gives the bounce yet, you do not have to compromise on the court feel at all.

3. Material

Nike Zoom Freak 4 use different materials on the shoe. One pretty obvious and basic material every sneaker has nowadays is mesh. The toe box and sides have a mesh upper with fuse overlays on the pressure points.

Swoosh has a plastic/ TPU material. The material is thin and comfortable. It has good padding in the ankle area and tongue.

The overall material is comfortable and not so stretchy at all. It conforms to the foot and gives great comfort. Being a big player, you will appreciate the lasting material underfoot as it wont give you any lasting discomfort..

4. Support

You can guess from the shoe’s wide shape that it will be the best in lateral containment.

The shoe’s lateral side has a big swoosh to give you good lateral stability on the lateral moves. The midsole area is not the one that you can easily bend in any direction. But it has a decoupled outsole and lacks any torsional plate.

So it would not be an ideal basketball shoe for many players looking for a rigid midsole. But it has rigid foam in the midsole. Therefore you cannot bend it easily.

The back of the heel has an internal TPU heel counter. In the low-cut Nike Zoom Freak 4, your ankles are safe with nice padding on the ankle area and a TPU heel counter.

Overall, it’s a supportive shoe.

5. Fit

The shoe has a perfect fit that wraps around the foot like a glove. I highly recommend everyone to buy a true-to-size pair.

Except if you have very wide feet, you would be more comfortable in half size than the actual size. It gives a secure lockdown.

The fit is amazing; there are no void spaces in the toe box, and you won’t experience ny heel slippage.

6. Looks / Appearance/ Colorways:

Nike has done an amazing job in designing Zoom Freak 4. I loved the use of different materials and the aesthetics of this sneaker.

It is in many colorways, including Unknown, Lightening, Greek Coastline, Letter Bros, Birthstone, Cookies and Cream, and Safari.

It looks superb in all colorways, especially The Greek Coastline has used a great colour scheme.

7. Outdoor/Durability:

Nike Zoom Freak 4 is not the ideal choice for outdoor use. WHY? Because the shoe has a narrow outsole tread. It will flat out on the hard outdoor surface sooner than later.

But it grips perfectly on any outdoor or indoor basketball court. It is perfect for rapid turns and side-to-side moves on the outdoor courts. But the grooves are very thin. Hence, I recommend that you only wear them on indoor courts.

8. Breathability/Ventilation:

Zoom Freak 4 is a very breathable sneaker. The toe box and lateral sides have thin mesh material. Especially on the lateral sides; it’s a see-through mesh.

Therefore these sneakers will give you extra air flow to help you cool down. Ventilation on Zoom Freak 4 is something that I truly appreciate.

9. User Review

There is a lot to like about Zoom Freak 4. Therefore it has received positive feedback from users globally. It has received a 4.8 rating out of 5 for its phenomenal performance on the court.

10. Expert Review

Tommy Liu

“Finally, with Zoom Freak 4, Nike is getting back on track with performance. But the only drawback is it does not feel premium. But that has never been a selling point of the Zoom Freak line. Zoom Freak 4 is my favorite from Freak line and my favorite shoe this year.”

Evan Yee

“The Nike Zoom Freak 4 has introduced nothing new in this one. In anime terms, this one is just a filler episode. I hope Freak 5 will be a better-looking, better-performing basketball shoe.”

Hoop and Life

“I give it 3.5/5. It’s very similar to Zoom Freak 3 in performance. There are some enhancements as well as drawbacks. Traction and cushion are pretty good after broken in. material is not the greatest. Support is not very good. It fits the big man hooper as well as the small man hooper.”

RunstretchTech

“These are not for outdoors. I will give them 8.7/10. Among both of Gianni’s signature sneakers, i.e., Giannis immortality 2 and Zoom Freak 4, I like the Immortality 2 better. But as long as you stay on your toes, you’ll be fine in them.”

Under Armour Curry Flow 10 review 2023

Here is the summary of the Under Armour Curry Flow 10 review. For a detailed review, continue reading!

Our Verdict:

Best for Ankle support & Guards

Curry 10 has maintained the quality and performance of the Curry 9 basketball shoes. It’s very supportive, with amazing traction and cushion. The material is soft and breathable. Fit and lockdown are excellent. In my opinion, it’s one of the best signature shoes of 2023.

Pros

  • Very springy and bouncy cushion
  • Reliable and consistent traction
  • Breathable upper
  • Protects ankle with a stiff ankle collar
  • Needs no break in time
  • Solid stability and supportive build
  • Dust repellent

Cons

  • Not great for the outdoors
  • Less impact protection
  • Unboxing & Intro of Under Armour Curry Flow 10

Under Armour Curry Flow signature sneakers line has been unmatchable for their supportive setup. Steph Curry has suffered many severe injuries during his basketball career.

Under Armour came up with a perfect design that allows fluid movements in fast direction changes. What completes the package is its rubber-free top-of-line traction pattern. That incredible innovation runs in the Curry sneaker line to maximize grip and minimize weight.

That said, I received mine, Under Armour Curry Flow 10, in a white box. The white under Armour logo on the top changes shade on tilting. Curry wrote on the sides, and that’s it.

Stephen Curry debuted Curry 10  in the “Iron Sharpens Iron” colorway. I ordered one pair, and the Warp upper looks more durable with tightly integrated thread. But is it a great performer on the court? Keep scrolling for the full performance review of Curry 10.

Detailed Under Armour Curry Flow 10 Review

1. Traction:

Under Armour Curry, 10 shoes have a Flow foam that serves as midsole and outsole. The outsole is more or less the same computer-generated traction pattern that we had in Curry 9.

The Curry Flow 10’s solid gripping traction is nonetheless the best traction pattern of the year. The spiral and circular traction pattern bites hard on the indoor and outdoor basketball courts.

As they say, the perfection and excellence continued in Curry’s latest sneaker, the debut release of the Curry brand under the UA umbrella. X on the outsole is the roman numeral for 10, as it’s the 10th signature sneaker of Steph Curry.

The white outsole bites well on any surface, but the dust pickup makes it difficult to go longer without wiping the outsole. It slips if you won’t wipe the outsole as the dust sticks in the deep nubs of the outsole.

Overall, it worked great for me, and I got consistent control even on the wet stops. So it’s top-tier traction.

2. Cushion:

Curry Flow foam makes the cushioning. The lightweight and soft Flow cushion is elastic and very springy. The cushion has a midfoot shank plate embedded that improves the jump height by giving you a solid base.

On your landings, it perfectly protects the foot muscles from crushing on hard surfaces with excellent impact protection. More so, the cushion supports the rebound backs and gives a ton of fun to play in.

It’s a Responsive bouncy spring. With all these superior qualities, it has not cut down on the court feel, making it easy to cut, stop and start faster.

Overall, it’s a decent cushion.

3. Material:

The upper material of Under Armour Curry Flow 10 is the engineered mesh that they call Warp. New Warp 2.0 has replaced the conventional Warp, a multilayered flexible and supportive mesh to enhance containment and comfort.

The forefoot toes area has overlays for durability, and the colored lines on the Iron Sharpen Iron colorway that I have looks more like they have stolen the Adidas 3 lines logo.

But apart from that, the mesh has more reinforcements and thread on high-wear areas where it needs the most.

The tongue has average padding with a pull tab with the Curry logo. The rear foot area has an overlay on the lateral side for stability. The material is lightweight and contains the foot very well.

4. Support:

Under Armour has implemented excellent support features in Curry Flow 10. The wide base of the Curry 10 makes it super stable for hard cuts and lateral moves.

The Warp upper acts as a seat belt with varying thickness on high-wear areas to contain the feet on the footbed and improve the lockdown.

Flow foam wraps on the sides and comes up like a wall with a TPU or a stabilizer on the rear foot lateral sides. On the back, an extra plastic piece cages the shoe and improves lateral stability. It would give you enormous control over the pivoting movements.

The back area is embedded inside with an internal heel counter for better ankle protection. Curry 10 gives abundant support and stability.

5. Fit:

The Curry Flow 10 is super snug and tight, but it does not hurt my feet. The snug fit is not a weakness in the shoe.

If you have a problem with the tightness around the feet, you might want to get half a size up. But I felt secure, and lockdown is exactly how I like it.

The tongue and inner side of the shoe are padded to improve the comfort level. It does not feel that there is any pitching, heel slides, or discomfort.

6. Looks / Appearance/ Colorways:

Under Armour Curry Flow 10 looks like Curry 9 for the most part. Having the same Warp upper and Flow outsole.

I like the simplistic yet tech-packed design of Curry 10. Under Armour consistently makes an all-around excellent performance hoop shoe that looks like a lifestyle sneaker with its lightest silhouette.

Under Armour Curry 10 is available in many colorways, and I expect more soon. In addition to its debut colorways Iron Sharpens Iron, there are Sour Then Sweet, Northern Lights, More Magic, Curry-Fornia, and Treasure Island colorways available.

Through Iron Sharpens Iron colorways, Stephen Curry thanks everyone who helped him during his journey.

7. Outdoor/Durability:

Under Armour Curry Flow 10 has foam on the outsole. That means that if you wear them longer outdoors, the foam will damage the tough surfaces.

Other than that, traction performance outdoors is as phenomenal as indoors. However, the white outsole gets dusty easily and needs wiping frequently.

So it’s ok if you want to wear it on the outdoor basketball court. But they are not going to last longer on consistent outdoor use.

So overall, the performance remains the same as indoors, but it’s not very durable for outdoor abrasive surfaces.

8. Breathability/Ventilation:

Under Armour Curry Flow 10 has nice airflow, with the upper being lightweight and mesh. It allows airflow through the toe box.

It’s not heavily padded on the inside. Forefoot has minimal padding to provide comfort and  good ventilation through the toe box.

I felt very comfortable and fresh after wearing them for hours on the basketball court.

9. User Review

Under Armour Curry Flow 10 is better in many ways than Curry 9. Its stability, comfort, traction, and lockdown are much better than the previous one.

It received a rating of 4.8/5 from the users.

10. Expert Review

Tommy Liu

“Overall so far so good. I dont find a reason to not like them. Nice cushioning and comfort, great traction performance on different setups. Nice lockdown and secure fit. When you combine a smooth ride with good stability, only good things happen.”

Hoop and Life

“ Its the more refined version of Curry 9. Hooping in a dusty court, they are pretty inconsistent when it comes to traction. Everything else besie this is flawless.”

Foot Doctor Zach

“Curry 10 is so much better than Curry 9. Flow foam is more tachy and stabilizers on lateral sides add more confidence on lateral moves. If you are looking for the shoe to go with nimble footwork, then Curry 10 is the great choice.”

Snkr Tech Talk

“The Curry 10 is more than an upgrade from Curry 9 with traction, support, cushion and material. These are all superior when I compare them with 9s. I do question where they will go with this design because both were similar.”

Are Kyrie Shoes Good For Basketball? [Explained For Beginners]

Kyrie’s basketball shoe line started with a contract between Nike and basketball star Kyrie Irving in 2014. Kyrie’s career had already taken off playing with Cleveland Cavaliers 3 years before this deal.

He achieved the Rookie of the year award for 2011-2012 and NBA All-Star Game MVP in 2014. Nike and Kyrie came together to bring performance basketball shoes that go with the artsy sense of Kyrie and include Nike’s best-researched material. If you are anyone who has grown a mad obsession with Kyrie shoes, then you would love

  • How it is a low-profile basketball shoe
  • Traction is grippy and supports your speed and agility
  • The lightweight shoes that are never going to come in the way of your quick moves
  • The snug fit, with no wiggle space on the toe box or heel

Read on because this article will tell you about Kyrie shoe’s history, performance, evolution over time, and the design reincarnation behind every signature sneaker.

Are Kyrie Shoes Good For Basketball

Yes, Kyrie’s shoes are excellent basketball sneakers. The low-to-the-ground basketball shoes go perfectly with your speed and agility. Kyrie basketball shoes are the best quality shoes that provide value for money. Designed after the playoff style of Kyrie Irving, you will enjoy every moment while playing in them. Nike and Kyrie collaboration has always been giving innovative designs with a stylish finish in Kyrie shoes.

Kyrie History & Controversy

Kyrie’s sneaker line started with the Dream colorway of Kyrie 1 basketball shoes. Nike design director Loe Chang expressed the incarnation behind the design.

Dream colorways have outsole coming up on the lateral side with spike shapes on the forefoot. This design inception came after Kyrie’s association with Sydney, where he was born.

They named it Dream because it was Kyrie’sKyrie’s dream to play as an NBA star that eventually came true.

Kyrie has always closely contacted the Nike design team for shoe design opinions. Things were going smoothly until Nike launched Kyrie 8.

In one of his Instagram posts, Kyrie Irving stated that he had no collaboration with Nike in the design and said that Kyrie 8 is trash. Afterward, Nike relaunched it with the name of Kyrie Infinity.

Moreover, Kyrie Irving made antisemitic remarks in one of the movies, which also included holocaust denial. Reports say that Nike has suspended its relationship after antisemitic tropes.

Kyrie Shoes and Their Performance Review

Are Kyrie Shoes Good For Basketball

Let’sLet’s take a look at the Kyrie shoes and their release dates. Also, we will rank the top 3 Kyrie shoes down below.

Kyrie 1

Kyrie 1 basketball shoes’ first colorway was released in December 2014. The dream colorway was the first of its line. It was released with only a 110$ price tag. The traction pattern and very low profile zoom help in sudden stops and go.

Kyrie 2

Kyrie 2 shoes were released in 2015 with more vibrant colorways and improved traction. The design inspiration had a relation to Kyrie’sKyrie’s life happening.

Moreover, it had more outsole curvature than the previous release. Traction and heel-to-toe transition were improved. The lightweight kyrie shoe with a bit hard surface is the best for any quick guard.

Kyrie 3

Kyrie 3 was released in 2016, similar to the previous release, with few differences. The shoes had an aggressive traction pattern and low cushion.

The sneaker had the slogan “Just be yourself” on the tongue. It is the best one that excelled in heel containment and lockdown. The lacing system allowed tying off the laces one loop down to give individual fit.

The shoe sole and design have details about his daughter’sdaughter’s birthday and the name of her mother around the sole.

Kyrie 4

Kyrie 4 was released in 2017. Unlike all the kyrie shoes to date, Nike improved cushioning in the Kyrie 4. Thus it was the better one in comfort and cushioning.

The shoe has a retro touch, as Kyrie liked old designs like Jordans. It has a very aggressive small zig-zag pattern that helps you in smooth piloting moves and stopping at a dime.

Kyrie 4 Low

Kyrie 4 low is very similar to Kyrie 4. The traction is a beast, but the cushion has been maintained low to the ground to give maximum court feel. The low-cut shoe had all the things the same as Kyrie 4.

Kyrie 5

Kyrie Irving preferred the retro style of premium silhouette they used in Kyrie 4. But in Kyrie 5, Nike has used mesh upper material to make it more breathable.

Moreover, the Nike Kyrie 5 has un matching support and stability feature. It has the same snug but comfortable feel. The shoe was released in many colorways and came in the famous TV series FRIENDS collaboration.

Kyrie 6

Kyrie 6 has continued to make amazing rubber outsoles with aggressive stopping power. The silhouette has a mix of synthetic leather and meshes upper.

They tried to improve the cushioning by including a zoom turbo unit on the top of full-length Phylon. The fit and lockdown are improved with the single strap over the laces.

Kyrie 7

Kyrie 7 has continued the tradition of adding relevant life stories and his affiliations in different colorways. Nike removed the strap on the top in this release. But it did not affect the fit.

The fit, lockdown, and support remain as good as the multidirectional wavy traction pattern. Kyrie 7 has maintained the low weight but improved cushion with the zoom heel unit.

Kyrie Infinity

Last up, we have Kyrie 8, a performance sneaker. These are going to be dope!

Kyrie is known for having great control over his moves. He slows down and then picks up the speed rapidly. Traction is more grippy than most kyrie shoes. The aesthetics of Kyrie Infinity are so far the best among all.

Alongside the kyrie main sneaker line, Nike has released 5 Kyrie Flytrap sneakers. The Nike Kyrie Low line has 5 sneakers out to date. Nike has maintained a lightweight and low-profile sneaker line in the form of Kyrie signature shoes.

What Makes Kyrie Shoes Different From Other Basketball shoes

Traction

No matter what, Nike has maintained Kyrie’s best traction over the year in all the signature sneakers. From the multidirectional herringbone traction pattern to racing bike and wavy aggressive traction patterns.

All are reliable and grippy over the court. On the clean court, traction is very consistent. While on the dusty court, it needs a quick wipe after every game.

Low Profile

Kyrie sneakers are low profile. These are very lightweight and have minimal cushioning to follow the speed and agility of a guard like Kyrie himself. Many players love the immense court feel and solid impact protection with subtle responsiveness.

Kyrie Shoes Good For?

Kyrie basketball shoes are best for shooting guards and point guards. The low-to-the-ground cushioning and minimum shoe weight allow them to move quickly on the basketball court.

On top of all, all kyrie shoes have grippy and solid traction, leaving the defense in shock when you make pivoting moves and dodgy turns.

Pros

  • Superior Traction
  • Impact protection
  • Supportive
  • Lateral stability
  • Great aesthetics
  • Loved by Kyrie Irving fans around the world
  • Amazing court feel

Cons

  • The cushion is very flat in the first few Kyrie signature shoes. However, it improved with time in the latest sneakers. But it’s flat for those who like more comfort and a low-court feel.

Conclusion

Fans have loved Nike Kyrie’s signature line since 2014 around the globe. Every colorway in each sneaker tells a little fable about Kyrie Irving’sIrving’s life and the people connected to him.

Its performance is better than most basketball sneakers. Just like KD, or LeBron’s signature line, Kyrie sneakers are the best of Nike so far.

Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen Review 2023

Here is the summary of the Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen Review. For a detailed review, continue reading!

Our Verdict

Nike LeBon Nxxt Gen is an excellent supportive shoe. In addition to good support and lockdown, its cushion is responsive, and traction is reliable. So what more do I want if I can get a LeBron at a lower price? I liked the shoe performance. It’s a balanced basketball shoe. It is one of the best basketball shoes for kids.

Pros

  • Dependable lockdown
  • Consistent traction
  • Excellent cushion
  • A cheaper LeBron in budget with excellent performance
  • Stable and very supportive sneaker
  • Great lateral containment
  • Very suitable for big guys and centers

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Upper material looks cheap

Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen comes in a white box with only two alphabets in black on the top, N and T; the rest I found by tilting the box as they are in white too. XX from the Nxxt reveals the time that LeBron completed with Swoosh company, that’s 20 years.

The sides of the box have a lion face, while the simplistic white box is slightly larger than the usual ones. The sneaker is Low-top, with a simple Mesh upper that you will notice right out of the box.

The double swoosh sign on the medial, where the bigger one has a geometric pattern, and the other is just a simple plastic piece. The lateral sides have another swoosh sign. The shoe silhouette completes with the tongue containing LBJ and Nike.

The translucent outsole pattern is the map of Akron, Ohio, where LeBron lived.

What’s Exciting About LeBron James’ Newest Signature line LeBron Nxxt Gen

Nike paves the way for the new generation into the sneaker world by introducing the latest LeBron sneaker line on the 20th anniversary of the contract with King LeBron.

It’s a perfect time to launch a signature line for a generation that loves speed and agility. So this sneaker is made to deliver the best shock absorption, durability, and control over the speed.

Well, I can’t state just one exciting thing for me. There are many good features. It’s a brand new line, which feels so much lighter.

As they said, it’s for the next Gen, so a Newbie can’t comfortably hoop in for so long and switch to another line. Because those are made explicitly for His style, His move, keep reading to know the answers.

LeBron Nxxt Gen Facts

1. Traction:

Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen’s traction pattern is a unique map pattern reminiscent of the area where LeBron lived. Traction is very consistent for hard stops.

It grips the clean indoor basketball courts well, and the grooves stick perfectly on the hardwood floor. It’s a pattern engineered to pick up traction from any foot movement.

On the lateral moves, the traction is phenomenal for stopping at a dime and pivots. It goes well with the speed and agility of the present-day or next generation. For which it is made. So it caters to the purpose perfectly.

The translucent outsole instead of the rubber is used here. That picks up dust and is easy to clean. But still, you have to ensure its outsole is clean for continuous solid traction.

2. Cushion:

The Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen uses Zoom units in the forefoot and heel. The Zoom Air is under the heel, and the Zoom turbo unit is in the forefoot.

So Zoom Air never ceases to amaze me regarding its ability to give impact protection and heel comfort. It gives a nice bounce and responsiveness. So you are perfectly safe if you make a couple of heel dominant strikes in the game.

Zoom turbo in the forefoot completes the cutting-edge cushioning technology setup in LeBron shoes.

Both units are top loaded, and the underneath foam is thicker that’s not so high up the ground to compromise the court feel but gives decent impact protection.

The overall cushion is good and lightweight.

3. Material:

Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen used Combined mesh material to cover the top shoe area, reducing weight and improving breathability.

It’s a vast square and crisscross mesh different from the usual mesh materials used in sneakers. The toe box has a slight synthetic leather patch for added durability on more complex surfaces for toe draggers.

The ankle collar and tongue have minimum padding. But there are no ankle pillows to secure ankle areas. Even then, the Nxxt Gen Material feels very soft and comfortable.

4. Support:

Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen bends in half; that’s the only thing worrying me about the shoe support. Even though the TPU Plastic plate is a part of the midsole, torsional support is not above average.

But it has a prominent outrigger that is great for the containment of your feet on the footbed. The mid-top basketball shoe has a simple lacing system with two extra eyelets on the ankle part.

It hugs the ankle part when you tie the laces, and the heel part has a TPU heel counter for a perfect and secure lockdown. There is no heel slippage.  All these features make the lateral stability and containment excellent.

5. Fit:

Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen is a snug-fit shoe. So a narrow footer should buy true-to-size fit while the medium and wide footer should at least buy half size up. Very wide feet players should buy a full size up than their actual size. It’s a narrow-fit shoe, so I bought half size up for me, and it’s good so far.

6. Looks / Appearance/ Colorways:

Faze Clan X, I Promise, and Wolf Grey are the colorways that are officially released from the Nike brand so far. I Promise being the coolest colorway that I got. Both shoe are in different colors and cross matching shoe laces.

I loved the aesthetics and minimal design and features of LeBron Nxxt Gen

7. Outdoor/Durability:

The LeBron nxxt Gen does not look so promising for the outdoors as its rubber grooves are on the softer side. So it will melt down soon on the heat and rough outdoor surfaces.

As far as you keep them for indoors, they are really good. Also the outdoor dust pickup will be higher thats not good for the traction.

The 160$ LeBron sneakers are best for indoor use. The only way to increase their life and longevity is to limit their use to indoors.

8. Breathability/Ventilation:

The Nike LeBron Nxxt Gen has upper mesh materials which is light weight minimal and breathable.

The combined mesh will allow the maximum airflow around the towbox. You wont feel sweatty on feet. Moreover its a great way to maintain foot hygeine and avoid bad smell.

9. User Review

LeBron Nxxt Gen is fresh air in the old lines of basketball sneakers. Nike did the best job stirring up some features and bringing up a suitable signature model in the mid-range for everybody to use. So for its best qualities, it’s getting a rating of solid 5 out of 5 from satisfied users.

10. Expert Review

“ Traction is amazing. But fit and lockdown are the best part. I liked how it feels on feet, and i felt its lockdown is better than LeBron 20. But 200$ are a lot to spend on them.”

Markches

“ if you can’t buy the LeBron 20s and ok with how the upper material is not premium. The cushion has good impact protection. The support of the upper is very nice. traction is excellent. Also, these are very lightweight sneakers. It’s the lightest LeBron from Nike.”

“Traction is good but picks up dust. Fit and support are nice too but once you flip, you flip entirely. Fit is narrow. By the time you use them, you loose a bit of comfort and get better lockdown.”

The Sole Drops

“Material is thinner, traction seems very good, cushion is responsive, and i loved the aesthetics. They look almost as good as LeBron 20. For 40 $ cheaper than LeBron 20 these are definitely looking better.”

Hoka Clifton 9 Performance Review: The Best Clifton Ever

The Clifton line is a long-time favorite among running shoe enthusiasts and the Hoka Clifton 9 is the best Clifton yet. What did Hoka do to improve this long-time favorite of runners worldwide? Let’s find out.

Price: $145

Men’s Weight: 9.1 oz

Women’s Weight: 7.3 oz

Drop: 5mm (27mm forefoot, 32mm heel)

Sizing: True to Size

  • Rundown: The Hoka Clifton 9 is the best Clifton to date. It’s the same great neutral cushioned shoe with added bounce and elasticity.

Hoka Clifton 9 top view

Midsole

The Hoka Clifton was basically the shoe that kicked off the high-stack running shoe craze. Back in the day, the original Clifton was something runners hadn’t ever seen before. Nowadays, the Hoka Clifton 9 doesn’t even qualify as a high-stack shoe. It’s still got a solid stack of foam but midsole stacks can be much much larger (see the New Balance SC Trainer and the Asics Superblast).

But despite not packing a big stack, the Hoka Clifton 9 is still soft and great for easy or recovery days. But Hoka tweaked the typical foam compound and now it’s more elastic and bouncy – a welcomed change.

We didn’t love previous Cliftons for long runs because they’d flatten out or feel dead by the end of 15+ miles and their overall life expectancy seemed to max out around the 120-mile mark (give or take). But the new foam seems livelier and feels like you’re still getting bounce even as you near 20 miles. The Clifton 9 works extremely well as a long run shoe. I imagine we’ll even see some pairs out on marathon courses due to the forgiving fit and all-around comfort.

Hoka Clifton 9 Outsole

Outsole

Another improvement is the outsole rubber. The durability in particular. A common complaint about previous Clifton models (and Hokas in general) was the tendency of the outsole to wear out early. But I think this new outsole will answer that critique. The rubber still grips well but didn’t take as much of a beating in our testing. It’s handling the miles better than previous iterations. The pattern is slightly different, not by much, but the real improvement seems to be the rubber compound itself. It’s going to stand up to plenty of wear.

Upper

The upper is still very comfortable but feels a little lighter and more breathable than the upper of the Clifton 8. This year the tongue is only gusseted on one side but that’s enough to prevent tongue slip and keep it in place for the long haul.

Is the Hoka Clifton 9 wide foot friendly?

Considering it comes in a wide version, yes! But the fit in this model is much better than last year and is not plagued by what many (us included) felt was an extreme narrowing in the toebox.

Is the Hoka Clifton 9 worth $145?

Absolutely. The Hoka Clifton 9 aligns quite nicely in terms of performance and attributes with other high performing shoes in the $140-$160 price range like the Asics Novablast 3, Brooks Glycerin 20, Asics Glideride 3, Air Jordna 1 Mid, New Balance Fresh Foam X More v4, and Saucony Triumph 20.
Hoka Clifton 9 Materials

Cons

There’s not much in the way of negative aspects of the Hoka Clifton 9. If you use the shoe as intended…for jogging, easy running, recovery runs, and long runs then you shouldn’t run into any issues. The arch support feels a bit more exaggerated vs. older models, but it actually complements the ride and rocker sensation, so while some may find it too aggressive, we feel like it works.

Hoka Clifton 9 on feet

Hoka Clifton 9 Summary

The Hoka Clifton 9 is 100% the best Clifton ever. It’s not particularly close either. The signature Clifton squish and plush upper are both still included making it extremely comfortable for running or just walking around. But the slightly more elastic and bouncy midsole takes the Clifton 9 to a new level. Because of that tweak, the Hoka Clifton 9 is a more versatile and pleasant ride than its predecessors.

The Clifton has long been a staple for many runners and one of the better beginner-friendly running shoes. That’s still the case…and then some.

adidas Harden Vol 7 Performance Review

The Harden Vol 7 looks weird but performs great, and brings back plush cushioning to adidas basketball.

Colorway: Better Scarlet / Core Black / Better Scarlet

Release Date: 2023

Price: $160

9/10
Total Score

James Harden’s 7th signature shoe, the adidas Harden Vol 7 is odd-looking, to say the least, but the shoe features a bunch of different performance features that could make these elite performance basketball shoes. The design team at adidas put together a very intriguing hoop shoe that also brings back the Boost we all know and love. Let’s jump into the performance review, to see exactly how they performed on court.

The adidas Harden Vol 7 comes with both solid and translucent rubber on the outsole. The solid portions are pods in the forefoot and feature (slightly slanted) herringbone traction, and the rest of the outsole is translucent with a radial traction pattern.

Traction on the Vol 7 is excellent. Both the solid and the translucent rubbers are grippy, and the combination of the herringbone and radial traction patterns offers very consistent and multidirectional coverage on court. This set-up is elite indoors and outdoors, but it won’t last long on the blacktop. The traction pattern isn’t deeply set, and translucent rubber tends to wear down quickly, but the shoe will grip well as long as the traction pattern lasts.

adidas Harden Vol 7 Cushioning

Cushioning on the adidas Harden Vol 7 might be the shoe’s best feature. What we have is a dual-density foam setup. In the forefoot and midfoot of the shoe we have adidas’ Lightstrike foam, and in the heel, we have adidas’ Boost. Now we have good news regarding both foams: the Lightstrike doesn’t feel like Lightstrike, and the Boost doesn’t feel like modern Boost. The Lightstrike in the Harden Vol 7 is much more bouncy and plush and the Boost in the heel is like the Boost we know and love from the mid-2000’s.

The adidas Harden Vol 7 offers a very well-balanced ride on the court, with just enough impact protection and bounce to keep you comfortable as you play, as well as the right amount of reactiveness to help you stay agile. Just a really great cushioning setup from adidas, and we finally have a more plush feeling hoop shoe in the adidas lineup.

adidas Harden Vol 7 Materials

In terms of quality, it really depends on which colorway you pick up. Some come with mainly textiles along the upper and others come with a leather build. In both cases, the materials a good but not great, but both do their job well on court. You get more than enough support and comfort from both builds.

One drawback you will find with this build is ventilation. This isn’t a huge issue for most hoopers, but, it is something to keep in mind if your feet tend to overheat.

adidas Harden Vol 7 Support

Support on the Harden Vol 7 is on point. We have a full-length, bottom-loaded shank plate that helps to keep you stable and springy on court, a very wide base with a ton of surface in contact with the court, and several portions of the outsole and midsole wrap around the upper and add containment to the shoe.

Two of the more remarkable design features on the shoe also affect its performance. That synthetic overlay we see in the forefoot of the shoe, which is similar to what we saw in the Harden Vol 1, adds containment in that area and flexes naturally with your foot. On the other hand, the sock collar and heel of the shoe are somewhat lackluster. The sock collar can make it difficult to get your foot in, especially if you use ankle braces, and the heel is not as well padded as we would have liked, and therefore lockdown isn’t excellent.

adidas Harden Vol 7 Fit

The adidas Harden Vol 7 fits true to size but because of the unusual build, finding the right size might be a bit tricky, and this is again, because of that sock collar. If you are planning to use ankle braces or have wider feet, you may want to go up half a size or try them on in-store. But in general, go true to size.

adidas Harden Vol 7 Overall

Well done adidas! The Harden Vol 7 brings back a ton of stuff we were missing from adidas basketball: the wow factor, a plush cushioning system, a well-performing Harden shoe, etc. and we get all of this in one of the most unique-looking hoop shoes of the year. Personally, I would have loved to have seen how the market would have received this model back when Harden was in Houston at the height of his powers and fame. I think these would have been ICONIC.

The Harden Vol 7 is one of the best hoop shoes of the year overall and is just a very well-balanced hoop shoe with a ton of flare.

UA TriBase Reign 5 Performance Review

Last year, we reviewed the Under Armour TriBase Reign 4 and felt like it had a lot of positives. Then we came back to let you know that the Under Armour Project Rock 5 was even better and it seemed like we might have a new contender in the upper echelon of cross training shoes. So, we reached out to the folks at Under Armour to see if they could keep the streak going with the all-new Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 and while they sent us these shoes for review, they have no involvement in this review, didn’t receive an advance look at it, and have not attempted to influence this review.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 5

Release Date: January 2023

Price: $130

Weight: 10.5 oz.

Drop: 2mm

Sizing: True to size

    • Rundown: The Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 is a super stable, versatile workout shoe that takes some break in time.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 Outsole and Traction

How do the Authors Train?

Arune Singh (age 41, 5’11”, 205lbs): Trains daily with functional fitness programming provided by Deadboys Fitness, founded by Colby “Seth Rollins” Lopez and Josh Gallegos. He has recently been training for 5Ks and looks for every opportunity to get some time on a heavy bag. Given his medical history of Sleep Apnea and Myasthenia Gravis, Arune focuses on lean muscle mass and getting down consistently to 190lbs, with a secondary focus on cardiovascular training and aesthetics. He works out in a home gym with a rower, air bike, bench, adjustable dumbbells, kettlebells, and either a cat or dog trying to obstruct him at every turn.

Drew Whitcomb (age 41, 6’6″ 195lbs): Trains daily with a focus on running, strength training, and mobility. He writes the majority of our running shoe reviews and runs a lot of miles both due to testing needs and his growing affinity for long-distance races. He recently completed the New York City Marathon. More marathons, half-marathons, 10k, and 5k races are in his future. His strength training and mobility regimen center around maintaining flexibility and lifting heavy to build power as a counterbalance to all the long-distance running he’s doing. His number one focus is staying injury free so he can keep up the sweet gig of reviewing shoes for a living.

What Is The Under Armour TriBase Reign 5?

According to the UA website, the KD 15 is described as: “The better your contact with the floor during your workouts, the better those workouts are going to be. The low, stable triangular base of the UA TriBase tech will help you through every rep, set, and WOD.”

The shoe has a 2mm drop and weighs 10.5 oz, meaning the drop remains the same from the previous model while shaving off 0.5 oz. It weighs in at a whopping 3 oz lighter than the Project Rock 5.

Pros

Solid (Tri)Base

Arune: If stability is your concern, there are a few training shoes on the market that I would choose over anything Under Armour is making with TriBase right now and the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 is no exception. I put these through the wringer – at least in my environment – with single leg movements (RDLs, RFESSs) and I felt more in touch with the ground than even my beloved Project Rock 5s. This shoe keeps you locked into the ground and reminds me how much I love the lower drop in my training shoes.

The stability also translates over to plyometrics, whether you’re doing jumping squats, box jumps, burpees, or skaters. I felt covered for everything I tackled this week.

But heavy lifts are where the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 really comes alive and you will most appreciate the shoe. It feels like every aspect of the shoe really comes together in perfect harmony at the bottom of your heavy squats.

Was this stable for someone as tall as you, Drew?

Drew: Yes, it was. Under Armour’s TriBase tech feels like gluing my feet to the floor, especially during any heavy lifts. Honestly, I even feel the difference when doing the bench press. My feet stay thoroughly planted allowing me to access the maximum amount of force from my muscles. As a tall guy that has to deal with a long range of motion, the extra stability is helpful.

Improved Upper

Arune: While I didn’t initially notice this when reviewing the Reign 4, the upper never fully broke in and at times – like with pushups and burpees – it felt like it was digging into the top of my foot when it flexed.

But the Under Amour TriBase Reign 5 has a much more flexible UA Warp upper this time around that feels like it moves with my foot instead of my foot moving in spite of the upper. There’s also none of the slippage I experienced with the 4 because you’re locked in (well…more on that later).

The upper will also appear in cons but I’d be remiss in not calling out the improvement here.

Drew: WARP is Under Armour’s best upper technology. It’s strong with comfort more like a knit or plush engineered mesh. Think running shoe upper but still supportive enough to keep the foot on the footbed when moving laterally doing ladder drills or other side-to-side exercises.

Made for Fitness

Arune: I touched on this earlier, but you can really do a lot – and comfortably – in the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5. From rowing to air bike to short runs to functional fitness, this shoe is built for a very well-rounded idea of fitness. While I wouldn’t call it the best at any one of those things, it is able to do them all at a very high level.

So if you just want to take one shoe to the gym with you to do everything, the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 likely has you covered short of long cardio sessions.

Drew: I largely agree but wearing the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 for running is a clunky experience that I don’t recommend. The impressive stability of the TriBase system makes each foot plant a bit too weighty while making it hard to flex your foot beyond the toes. That and heel landings are pretty stiff. Stationary bikes, however, are not an issue. The firm base actually helps generate more power in a similar way to TPU-bottomed cycling shoes.

Everything else in the gym is fair game. So yes, it’s a versatile fitness shoe with one big caveat.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 Materials

Cons

Under Armour Fit Consistency

Arune: I have worn Under Armour training shoes more than any other training shoe for the past 18 months. I’m clearly a fan, but I swear that every model has such a radically different fit that I have no clue what to expect.

One of my favorite things about the Reign 4 is that it felt wide foot friendly but there has never been a moment in the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 where I didn’t feel it crushing my left pinky. Now that isn’t new for me – I’ve had to skip out on most Nike shoes because of the narrow fit and I find most footwear, in general, to be too narrow for my Hobbit feet (namely in the forefoot).

But the Project Rock 5 and Reign 4 both were great for my feet, so it’s been an adjustment to feel that pressure on my forefoot day after day.

This is also complicated by the fact I found the forefoot incredibly, incredibly warm from the first time I tried them on. Sorry for the TMI folks, but my feet were sweating like I would expect to happen in the liner of my shorts (shout out to Ten Thousand, you’re great) and not on my feet.

Please, Drew, don’t regale us with any sweaty groin stories – I’ve probably lost the audience already.

Drew: How do I even follow that up? (Editor’s Note: You don’t, just walk away.)

Last (P)lace

Arune: I’ll keep this one short: the laces don’t stay laced and that means the entire fit of the shoe is FUBAR unless you double knot it…and then unknot and reknot between sets.

Drew: Rope laces are not a good choice on a cross training shoe. I would consider swapping the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5’s laces with something different.

Break in that Breaks You

Arune: No one has ever accused the Reign line of being light, cloud-like shoes and I think that’s fine – I don’t mind a thicker, heavier shoe. But even though this one is lighter than the Project Rock 5, it felt like a brick on my foot the minute I laced it up (which took a few tries as I noted above).

And it hurt my feet a lot.

The first day wearing these shoes was painful, so much so that I had to stop using them after ten minutes on the rower and I wasn’t sure how I would write this review because I didn’t want to wear them. But each day became a bit more comfortable, with the Micro G midsole adapting to my feet and providing a nice bit of responsive cushioning as time went on that got us to the pros listed above. I need to note that the shoe isn’t the most flexible overall – I can feel it under my foot every time I try to bend and that’s not something I particularly love.

I just knocked out a 6000m row without any of the pain I had felt earlier in the week (other than the relatively narrow toe box) and each day makes that midsole comfier. But if this wasn’t a shoe I had received from UA, I don’t know if I would have given it a week to break in – not in a world with so many other great cross training shoes that are so good right out of the box.

Drew: I agree that it’s too much break-in time for a modern cross trainer. That said, the side effect is the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 is going to be super durable. The stiff midsole and materials will take a beating and keep performing the same.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 On Foot

Is this for me?

Arune: While the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 is a shoe that does a lot of things well, it is not a shoe I plan to continue using after this performance review. Not only do I have two colorways of the Project Rock 5 that I use right now, but I still find the Reebok Nano 4, 5 & 6 to be shoes that have held up as preferred training shoes all these years later.

Drew: Meh. I’ll stick with the good old GoRuck Ballistic Trainer for my gym work when I’m not testing other models.

Is this for you?

Arune: If you don’t have wide feet and you liked the Reign 4, then I think the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 will be right up your alley. Well, if you can solve the lacing. It’s hard to beat that stability.

But if you’re not particularly fond of the Reign series, you might – like me – find this to be one step forward, one step back, and find other options on the market that deliver the experience you want at a similar price point and with similar performance.

Drew: If you’re a fan of the TriBase Reign line you’ll get largely the same experience as the previous models after you’ve broken them in. Everyone else likely has better options…see our Best Cross Training Shoes list for the shoes we recommend.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 Summary

Arune: After a leap forward with the Reign 4 and Project Rock 5, it feels like the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 isn’t offering anything the company hasn’t previously delivered in at least an equal form.

That doesn’t mean this is a bad shoe – once you break it in, there’s a whole lotta good, but the Reign 5 simply isn’t a shoe I’ll be reaching for on a regular basis.

Under Armour really feels on the cusp of something great with their recent training shoe releases and this shoe doesn’t deter me from that belief – but I’m hoping either the future Project Rock 6 or TriBase Reign 6 recapture the excitement I was feeling about UA before testing this shoe.
